This piece is done! I like it. I will feature it on my upcoming Stitch & Slash Craftsy class and then send it off to travel the country in the SAQA Seasonal Palette exhibit. Here’s a photo and some details of the machine stitching.

So here’s the next step. I’m revealing the purple and like it a lot. Now I have to decide how to add the decorative machine stitching. I was thinking of adding white thread to stitch over the purple but my critique group felt it would complicate my design. I have decided to cut away the purple background underneath the white to brighten the piece. That’s the next step and I’ll decide where to go from there. One decision at a time.

Several of months ago, I was contacted by one of the editors of Quilter’s Newsletter who had visited my one-woman show at the Mancuso “Denver National Quilt Festival” last year. She wanted to know if they could create a pattern for my Undulation quilt. Of course I said yes and they just sent me a PDF of the opening page of the pattern they created from my art. The pattern will appear in the April/May issue and subscribers will receive it at the end of February and newsstand copies will be available on March 13th. I’m excited to see how they “patterned” my quilt since I didn’t use a pattern myself! Click on this link to see the quilt!

Teaching at Houston!

I just got an invitation to teach my Stupendous Stitching class at the International Quilt Festival in Houston this year. I’m excited to be at this prestigious event. My all-day class will be held on October 29th (my birthday!) so if you are planning to go to this festival, please think about taking my class. I guarantee you will have fun and learn a lot!

Whew! Felt good to cut away all that yellow. It was giving me a headache! Now, the piece is getting more interesting to me. I’m liking the lines made by the “spring like” fabric and the contrast of the deep purple. I could leave it like this but I think it’s still a little too boring. I think I will reveal the purple in the outer circles of the larger circles and see where I’m at.

Busy Month for Exhibits!

This has been a busy month! I have pieces in 4 different exhibits here in Colorado and had 4 Opening Receptions to attend!

The first one was an exhibit curated by Mary Williams at the Parker Adventist Hospital in Parker Colorado. I have 4 pieces hanging in their gallery and the reception was fun! Best food ever! Here’s a photo of my pieces.

Next up was the “Best of Santa Fe” exhibit at 910 Gallery Space on Santa Fe. My piece, Tribal Dance was juried into the show. Here’s a photo of the piece hanging in the gallery.

Then there was the SAQA/SDA show organized by Liz Kettle and Scott Farmer at Red Rocks Community College. I was teaching all day and arrived late so I didn’t have a chance to take any photos of this event — too frazzled!

I ended the week with the opening reception at The Art Institute of Colorado where Kristi Baca organized a juried show for the Surface Design Association. I did manage a few photos there. Here are the two pieces that were juried into the show and one of Kristi Baca (right) and my friend PJ Bergin from Salida, CO.

I love yellow but now you know why I limit the use of this color to small pieces. Pretty overwhelming! So this is the next layer to go. (Gee, these decisions are becoming easier as I make each one!)

Now I’m working on the large circles in the middle. Cutting through the white layer reveals this flower fabric which so far has provided a “hint” of color and now is totally overwhelming. My work is abstract — not representational so this layer has GOT TO GO!

My initial idea was to have a white field of snow for the “flowers” to poke through and that’s why I added an additional layer of white as the 4th layer. So, I started cutting through to reveal that layer on the smaller circles on the outside of the piece. I like this look but now I think it would look boring if I did this everywhere. What do you think?

The real decisions for how this piece will look in the end is where do I want to cut through all 5 layers to reveal the dark purple. I decided to start with the middle of the circles. It looks like a strange caterpillar!
