I thought about my inspiration photo (see my previous post ) so I chose a deep purple instead of the red and LOVE it! I usually layer four fabrics but I realized I needed 5 to get the effects I’m going for. I want to “mask” the flower fabric so it will show only “blotches” of color so I need to cover that with a whitish fabric. You can never show too much yellow (since it will take over and dominate the piece) so I will layer that one in the middle and it will only show as an outline under the flower fabric. Then, I need another layer of white to use as a choice of background (remember, my idea is evoking flowers poking through the snow) and my final layer will be purple that I will use to add depth and interest.
My friend Jane Jones, (and master colorist), visited me at my studio and said “You nailed Spring!” Whew! It’s a start! ( I might have to cut away some purple underlying the white to lighten it up. That will be interesting. Never did that before! But that’s why I challenge myself to enter these types of shows — to try new things and if I make a mistake, to learn new things!
