More New Work – Felting, Couching & Stitching

A couple of weeks ago, I got the urge to work with a felted background and apply decorative machine  stitches and couching to see what textures I could create so I went out to buy an “embellisher”.  These machines are relatively inexpensive so if I decided I didn’t like the result, I wasn’t worried about wasting a lot of money.  I had purchased one of these machines years ago, tried it for a couple of weeks and broke so many needles, I gave up.  But companies got smarter and re-designed these machines so they now have 12 needles and you can replace each needle when it breaks instead of have to replace the entire needle holder.

I had some wool roving in my studio and some commercial black felt so I started with that to create my base.  Here’s what I came up with.  I like it!  So I’m making more.  These pieces are mounted on a 12″ square panel that I painted black.

Here’s a picture and a detail.
